In 2013, the first incarnation of the Rieslingfreak No.8 “Schatzkammer” Riesling was born. The exquisite balance of sweetness and acidity made this an intensely appealing wine in its youth, and the fresh fruit flavours were a delight to behold. John knew however, that the foundational character of this this style of Riesling; being extremely refined with high acid and low pH, meant that it was perfectly suited for extended cellaring. Extended bottle maturation is universally embraced for the exulted Kabinett styles of Germany, but almost unheard of for sweet Australian Rieslings. John squirreled-away a few precious cases of the inaugural No.8 with a museum release in mind, only to emerge when the wine had lingered for more than 10 years in the Rieslingfreak family cellar.
